Local 2195 Women's Committee
Support Troops
By John Davis
The Local 2195 Women’s Committee
in Athens, Alabama has been busy working on a project for our troops
this fall. The Committee raffled off two tickets to the Alabama-Auburn
game and made $1400. The Committee usually does some type of holiday
assistance at Christmas and this year decided to do something for our
troops. The group began collecting shoeboxes to mail personal items
for our military personnel. The boxes were filled with candy, playing
cards, shaving cream, shampoo, and personal items.
“We decided to do this to let our troops know that we are thinking
about them this holiday season,” states Women’s Committee
Chair Tammy Roberts. “We began collecting shoe boxes, then went
shopping with the money we made from the raffle. Another item we collected
was used videotapes. The troops have VCRs at many places, but they have
few movies. We shipped 135 movies with our other shipments.”
The Women’s Committee received some assistance in the project
as well. Local 2195 represents workers at the Delphi Automotive facility
in Athens, Alabama. The Delphi Community Relations Committee heard about
the effort and decided to donate the shipping cost to the project, allowing
more money to be spent on items for the boxes. “This is a very
good work and we thank the Local 2195 Women’s Committee for allowing
us to participate in it,” adds Harry Fuller, Human Resource Supervisor
and member of the Delphi Community Relations Committee.
“This holiday seasons thousands of our young men and women will
be spending the holiday very far from home,” adds Local 2195 President
Terry Scruggs. “Hopefully these packages will brighten the day
of our troops
and let them know the folks back home are thinking of them.”
The Committee recently mailed the first group of boxes to the troops.
They will continue to collect items for another mailing in December.
If you know of a service person that would like a box full of items
this Christmas, contact the any member of the Women’s Committee
or call the Union Hall and leave the name and mailing address as soon
as possible.
A special thank you to the Local 2195 Women’s Committee and the
Delphi Community Affairs Committee for supporting our troops.
