UAW Region 8 Strengthens Union Representation Through Grievance Handling Training in
Conyers, Georgia
Conyers, Georgia — UAW Region 8 Education Department
Education is one of the most powerful tools we have in the labor movement, and that commitment was on full display in Conyers, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22, 2026, as dedicated UAW members came together for an engaging training focused on Understanding Grievances and Grievance Handling.
Under the direction of UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith and Assistant Director George Palmer, I had the privilege of facilitating this training for members representing UAW Locals 472, 882, 10, and 1103.
The training was hosted by UAW Local 472 President Tony Washington, whose hospitality and commitment to strengthening union representation helped make the program a success. I was assisted by UAW Region 8 Servicing Representative Norris Walton, whose experience and insight added tremendous value to our discussions.
Throughout the training, we explored the grievance procedure, the importance of enforcing negotiated contract language, and the critical role union stewards play in protecting the rights of their fellow members. We discussed identifying potential contract violations, investigating grievances, gathering facts, documenting evidence, meeting contractual timelines, and effectively presenting grievances to management.
One message remained clear throughout the class: A strong contract is only as effective as the union representatives who are prepared to enforce it.
What impressed me most was the enthusiasm, participation, and dedication of the members in attendance. They asked thoughtful questions, shared workplace experiences, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to becoming stronger advocates for their coworkers. My hope is that each participant left with greater confidence and additional tools in their union toolbox to hold the company accountable through the grievance procedure.
I want to personally thank Local 472 President Tony Washington for hosting this educational opportunity, Servicing Representative Norris Walton for his assistance, and every participating member who took the time to strengthen their skills and knowledge.
I also extend my appreciation to Director Tim Smith and Assistant Director George Palmer for their continued leadership, support, and commitment to meaningful education throughout UAW Region 8.
One of the most rewarding parts of serving as an Education Representative is seeing our stewards develop the knowledge and confidence to stand up for the membership. When we educate our stewards, we empower our members. When we enforce our contracts, we protect our rights. And when we stand together, we strengthen our union.
Education is power. Knowledge is strength. Solidarity is what moves us forward!
