UAW REGION 8 EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Empowering Members Through Education at
UAW Local 1853
Spring Hill, Tennessee | October 13–15, 2026

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have in building a stronger, more informed, and more engaged union.

During October 13–15, 2026, I had the privilege of visiting UAW Local 1853 in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to facilitate three days of educational training focused on the Effective Educator program, UAW 101, and additional UAW Core Values curriculum.

This was an outstanding group of hardworking, dedicated union members who demonstrated a genuine commitment to strengthening their local union and serving their membership. What made this class especially rewarding was the passion and dedication each participant brought to the classroom. These members not only recognize the importance of union involvement but also volunteer countless hours of their personal time to support their local union and fellow members.

Participants included the Education Chairperson, Bylaws Committee members, Community Service Chairperson, Recreation Committee Chairperson, Civil Rights Chairperson, and members representing various standing committees within UAW Local 1853.

Throughout the training, participants strengthened their understanding of the UAW’s history, principles, core values, and the importance of membership education. The Effective Educator program also provided participants with valuable instructional techniques, classroom facilitation skills, and the confidence needed to effectively deliver educational programs to their fellow members.

Upon successfully completing the training, these members are now equipped to serve as effective educators within UAW Local 1853. They can take the knowledge and skills gained during these three days back to their local union and facilitate several UAW educational courses for their membership.

This is what building a stronger union is all about: educating members who will, in turn, educate others. By developing educators within our local unions, we create opportunities for continued learning, stronger leadership, greater participation, and a more knowledgeable membership.

This educational initiative was conducted under the leadership and direction of UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith and Assistant Director George Palmer, whose continued commitment to membership education helps ensure that our local unions have the resources, training, and support necessary to succeed.

Special recognition goes to UAW Region 8 Servicing Representative Chuck Davenport, who coordinated the training request made by UAW Local 1853 President John Rutherford. Their commitment to providing educational opportunities for the membership reflects the importance of investing in the future of our union.

I want to personally thank President Rutherford, the leadership of UAW Local 1853, and every participant who dedicated three days to furthering their union education. Your enthusiasm, participation, and willingness to take on the responsibility of educating others are a true reflection of what union solidarity represents.

The strength of our union begins with an educated and engaged membership. When we share our knowledge, develop new leaders, and invest in one another, we build a stronger UAW for generations to come.

Education builds knowledge. Knowledge builds confidence. Confidence builds leadership. And strong leadership builds a stronger union.

In Solidarity,

David “Shaggy” Firkins

UAW Region 8 Education Representative
