Thank You To My Union Family

I have always felt our union is a big family. Over the past month, I have been reminded of that over and over. My family had two incidents, between my grandson Colton being hospitalized with a serious illness and then this week, I lost my mother.

With each occurrence, I was overwhelmed with the out pouring of love that I receive from my Region 8 family. I am happy to report my grandson is at home and doing well. For a moment, the situation was serious and my family was extremely concerned about his wellbeing. The calls, cards, messages and prayers were of great comfort during that time.

About the time that Colton improved and was able to return home, my mother’s health declined and we lost her on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Again, I was overcome with the calls, text, facebook messages, visits, flowers and prayers. Your acts of kindness made an extremely difficult time easier to get through and I appreciate each and every one of you.

One of our national treasures is Dolly Parton. She has probably done more good with her celebrity than any entertainer in history. I recently saw a quote by Dolly that said “storms make trees take deeper roots.” At the time I read that it stuck with me, but over the past month that quote has ingrained itself on my mind. My roots have gotten deeper, but it was your support, you concern and your love that covered those roots with rich earth to make them strong.

I hope in some way I can repay the love and support you have shown me through my storms. There is an old saying that hard times don’t last but though people do. You are my strength, my hope and my toughness. On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for your concern, your love and your help in sinking my roots. Thank you my UAW family for being there when I needed you and I hope I can always be there for you.

In Solidarity,

UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith
