Investing in Our Members Through Education
UAW Region 8 Continues Building Stronger Union Leadership at Kentucky Truck Plant

Under the leadership of UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith and Assistant Director George Palmer. UAW Region 8 Education Representative David “Shaggy” Firkins and UAW Region 8 Servicing Representative Amanda Goin conducted an engaging Grievance Handling, Understanding Grievances, and Note-Taking class for the newly elected Committee Persons at UAW Local 862 – Kentucky Truck Plant.

The training focused on providing newly elected representatives with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively represent the membership, investigate workplace issues, document grievances, and advocate for workers with confidence and professionalism. These are essential tools that help ensure every member has a strong voice in the workplace.

In addition to the Committee Person training, Amanda Goin and David “Shaggy” Firkins also conducted a comprehensive two-day Executive Board Training for the officers of UAW Local 862. The sessions emphasized leadership, teamwork, union governance, and the responsibilities of serving the membership with integrity and accountability.

The week was filled with tremendous energy, meaningful discussion, and a commitment to learning. Most importantly, it reinforced the belief that education is one of the strongest investments we can make in our union. The knowledge gained in these classrooms does not stay in the classroom—it goes back into the plants, the local unions, and benefits every UAW member we represent.

A special thank you goes to UAW Region 8 Assistant Director George Palmer, who stopped in to visit both classes. Assistant Director Palmer spoke with the participants, shared words of encouragement, and personally thanked each member for their dedication and willingness to serve their fellow UAW brothers and sisters.

UAW Region 8 remains committed to providing quality education and leadership development because an informed union is a stronger union. Together, we continue building the next generation of leaders who will proudly serve our membership and move our union forward.

In Solidarity,
David Firkins
UAW Region 8 Education Representative
