Join The UAW
Researchers and Postdocs at Johns Hopkins University voted today to organize and join the UAW. The vote was 97% yes as these workers decided to join together for collective bargaining. John Hopkins University is in Baltimore, Maryland with the new local being part of UAW Region 8.
“This was a hard-fought, worker driven effort, and we could not be prouder to welcome the postdocs of Johns Hopkins to the UAW family,” said Tim Smith, Director of UAW Region 8. “The vote results send a strong signal to the John Hopkins administration: it’s time to sit down at the bargaining table and negotiate the improvements and protections these workers deserve. We look forward to supporting these workers as they start bargaining for a first union contract.” |
The graduate students at Johns Hopkins University, one of the most recognized names in medical excellence, have voted overwhelmingly to be represented by the UAW. The graduate students were seeking the same things we all want, good pay, fair treatment, and a voice in the workplace. They now become the first university in MD to unionize, but as the organizing committee said" they will not be the last". Organizing team when results were announced.
