Reflecting On The
39th International UAW Constitutional Convention

What a week! As the 39th International UAW Constitutional Convention comes to an end, it is safe to say it was a productive week.

Let me begin by saying how grateful I am to serving another term as Region 8 director. To have no opposition again was very humbling and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I would ask you to still return your ballot even though I have no opposition. Participating in our democratic process is an honor and a responsibility. Ballots will go in the mail the middle of August and must be returned in October.

Region 8 showed up and showed out at the 39th Constitutional Convention. Our delegates were prepared and made a difference every day. Those who served on our convention committees were leaders. During debates, our delegates gave thought provoking and insightful comments.

Addressing the issues around defining a retiree was addressed this week. Delegates also passed resolutions to make preparations to build a war chest for May Day 2028. Many other resolutions were passed that will improve the day to day operations of local unions.

Region 8 is truly a family. From New Mexico to North Carolina and Pennsylvania to Florida, we cover 17 states and many sectors. While geographically and sector wise, we are diverse, at the end of the day we are one family. Over the past month this has been very aware to me as my family dealt with an issue. My eight year old grandson had a serious medical issue and I was touched by the outpouring of prayers, calls and messages on his behalf. I am proud to report he is at home and improving. Your love and concern reminded me how we all lean on each other in time of need and I hope we never forget that.

Again thank you for your support and I pledge to continue to watch out for every member of our Region 8 family over the next four years.”

In Solidarity,

UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith
