Truckers
roll on Local 1577 first Ryder local in UAW
Local 1577, in Spring Hill, Tenn., was the first Ryder
Trucking unit to be organized by the UAW.
Chartered in 1993, Local 1577 members provide transportation support to
the Saturn plant which is represented by UAW Local 1853. Though workers
at other Ryder sites have also chosen the UAW as their representative
(many in this past year alone), Local 1577 members are still proud to
say they were the first to fly the UAW flag.
Their union patriotism doesn’t end with the flying of a flag, either.
As well as being a community-oriented group, the UAW members in Spring
Hill are actively involved in supporting locked-out UAW workers at the
Peterbilt plant in Madison, Tenn.
“We are there for our brothers and sisters and we fight beside them,”
said UAW Local 1577 President and Chairman Kenneth Austin. “We are
so appreciative of the support that Region 8 and all the other UAW locals
in this region have given us over the past years. It’s important
to us to give back,” he said.
