From the Director

In politics, it’s what we do in-between that counts
Many issues face working America today. Not only are we suffering the effects of NAFTA, but the administration is pushing its so-called “free trade” agenda to all of Central and South America.

Unemployment is at its highest level in 12 years. We are under assault from corporate America and their conservative representatives in Congress. Anti-worker legislation is prevalent.

The Family Time Flexibility Act is just one issue affecting working men and women today. The union stands vigorously against any change in Federal law, which would repeal the 40- hour work week.

Our unions are under attack from corporate America — from discharges during organizing campaigns to unlawful lockout of workers who just want a fair contract. For every $1 the labor movement spends politically in the fight for working men and women, big business spends $12.

Corporations have no loyalty to the average worker in this country and no problem seeking to increase their own profits and personal wealth. Union people and all workers must come together and exercise our power at the ballot box. We must change this great country by electing candidates who support workers.

Region 8’s V-CAP program is in full swing. I urge you to donate to the Voluntary-Community Action Program. If you already do, consider increasing the amount you contribute. It is one of our most important tools in fighting the power big business can wield when they pour millions behind candidates who then push anti-worker legislation when elected.

The UAW’s political action agenda over the next year features mobilizing union members and members of our communities around trying to keep America strong by keeping a strong manufacturing base in our economy. Our goals are:
(1) The right of workers to organize and collectively bargain,
(2) A fair trade policy that lifts up workers here and around the world, and
(3) A universal and comprehensive single-payer national health care insurance for every man, woman and child in America.
