More Freightliner workers climb on board
Georgian parts distributors vote UAW, 42-6

by Alvin Smith,
UAW Region 8, Servicing Rep.

On April 16, workers at Freightliner Parts Distribution Center in Duluth, Ga., voted overwhelmingly, 42 - 6, to make the UAW as the union of their choice to represent them.

By choosing the UAW as their union, the Duluth workers are joining workers at other Freightliner locations in Mt. Holly, Gastonia and Cleveland, N.C. and, hopefully, three more plants in South Carolina, where organizing drives are currently going on.

Since Freightliner is owned by DaimlerChrysler, these 50 workers are joining a growing number of existing DaimlerChrysler workers who already belong to the UAW. Since the April vote, Georgian workers have been assigned to an amalgamated unit of UAW Local 10, which represents 3,300 General Motors workers in Doraville, Ga.

The UAW urges all union members to take the time and make the opportunity to welcome our new brothers and sisters from Freightliner into the UAW. I have been fortunate enough to be assigned as their servicing representative and now have the task of negotiating their first contract. Let’s all welcome these proud new members of UAW Local 10.

First shift workers at the Freightliner Parts Distribution Center in Duluth, Ga., show off their union pride and joy in voting over-whelmingly for the UAW.
