UAW Region 8 Alabama-Mississippi Area Women’s Council Essay Winners

The winners in the UAW Region 8 Alabama-Mississippi Area Women’s Council recently announced the winners in their annual Essay Contest. The winners are:

First Place – Kala Ann Jones
East Lawrence High School
Northwest Shoals Community College

Second Place - Amanda James
Austin High School
University of Alabama

Third Place- Kevin Williams
Winfield City High School
University of Alabama

“We thank each participant who took the time to enter,” states Alabama-Mississippi Area Women’s Council Essay Program Chair Tammy Roberts. “It is our desire that every student who entered the contest learned something positive about the important role unions play in the labor field. We wish them all well in the future.”

This year’s essay topics were “How Free Trade Impacts the Labor Movement” or “Understanding the Purpose of a Union Workforce”. The Alabama-Mississippi Area Women’s Council Essay contest has a two-fold purpose; with those being providing much needed scholarship money to perspective students and encouraging students to learn more about the role that organized labor has played in building the working class of our country.
