Bevis Challenges UAW Members to Hold the Line on Health-care and Social Security

“Health Insurance will soon become part of class warfare in America!” UAW Region 8 Assistant Director, Donny Bevis told UAW Members attending the First Quarter CAP Conference Tuesday, March 22, at the Nashville Sheraton Hotel. Speaking to a group of UAW Members from Local Unions across Tennessee, Bevis delivered a blistering attack on the declining state of adequate Health-care for America’s Workers and the Bush Administration’s attempt to privatize Social Security.

Bevis began his compelling and moving address by describing how the battle for American Organized Labor has shifted its focus from traditional disputes to Health-care based on the faulty premise that Health-care impedes a company’s ability to be profitable. “Health Insurance will soon become part of class warfare in America,” Bevis Proclaimed. He then described how the battle for Health Insurance will be fought on the backs of American Workers. “Health Insurance is a Right! Not a privilege!” Bevis continued, he then described how America was lagging behind other developed countries in the area of Health-care and Health Insurance. We, the American working people will have to put on a full court press to protect prescription drugs,” Bevis concluded

“Something is not right when a company pays its CEO 150 million dollars a year and cannot afford Health-care for its workers!” Bevis expounded, “And now our precious Social Security is under attack.” Bevis then cited numerous examples of how the privatization of Social Security will affect American Workers. “This is a program that will take food off the tables of working families to fund 401K pensions,” Bevis decreed. “You can not convince me that our people will reap a great windfall from this program,” he continued. “Our country is in terrible shape and this reflects upon the leadership of our country. Our leadership is wrong! This administration is using Christian values to rob the workers in this country. It’s scary to think of the legacy that Bush will leave this Nation. This administration has turned its back on working men and women. We must fight to keep stable jobs in America. We must fight to protect Health-Care and we must fight to protect our Social Security!”
